Organic Chemistry

Chapter Objectives
At the end of this unit students will be able to
1.  describe the relatiaonshp between the nubmer of valence electrons and bonding in carbon.
2.  identify and name, using the IUPAC system, alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes, cyclic hydrocarbons, and aromatic hydrocarbons..
3.  describe the difference between unsaturated and saturated hydrocarbons.
4.  explain why structural isomers have different properties.
5.  describe the petroleum refining process.
6.  identify and name, using the IUPAC system, the functional groups in halocarbons, alchols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, esters, carboxylic acids, and amino and nitrogen-containing organic compounds.
7.  describe the structures of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, proteins, nucleotides, and nucleic acids.
8.  state the balanced chemical equations for photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
