Hair Analysis

Title: Hair Analysis

Purpose:

  • To describe the structure of mammal hair
  • to determine differences in hair structure
  • to determine the identity of unknown hair

Materials:

  • human hair
  • cat hair
  • rat hair
  • guinea pig hair
  • dog hair
  • unknown hair
  • water
  • tweezers
  • microscope
  • slides and cover slips
  • poker chips

Procedure:

  1. use poker chips to draw circles for drawings
  2. make wet mount of own hair and of 3 other persons
  3. observe, draw, describe under low and high power
  4. make wet mount of split end
  5. make wet mount of chemically treated hair
  6. identify scale and medulla patterns
    • scale: coronal (encircles entire shaftl, imbricate (short and wide), spinous (long and narrow)
    • medulla: absent, continuous, intermittant, fragmented
  7. make wet mounts of mammal hair samples and compare/contrast to human samples
  8. make wet mount of unknow hair sample, identify, and explain your identification reasons

Results: This will consist of your drawings and descriptions

 

Analysis & Discussion: Describe what you did, compare/contrast hair samples, discuss your identification of unknown hair sample

Conclusion:

  • a one sentence testable statement
