Title: Microscope Labs

Purpose:

  • To learn to use a microscope
  • To observe, draw, and describe objects seen under a microscope

Materials:

  • Microscope
  • Prepared Slides (letter "e", cork, threads, fibers, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells)
  • Human hair (yours)
  • Mammal hair
  • Onion skin: yellow, white, & purple
  • Elodea leaves Slides & Cover Slips
  • Potatoes, Tomatoes, Green Peppers, & Apples
  • Pond Water
  • Toothpick
  • Iodine Methylene Blue

Procedure:

  • Observe, Draw, & Describe all prepared slides at low and high power
  • Make wet mount of human and mammal hair. Observe, draw, and describe normal, chemically treated, and mammal hair samples. Also, observe, draw, and describe split ends
  • Make wet mounts of, onion, Elodea, potato, tomato, apple, green pepper…observe, draw, & describe at low and high power & label cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm.
  • Make wet mount of cheek cell using methylene blue….. observe, draw, & describe at low and high power & label cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm.
  • Make wet mount of "pond water"…observe, draw, & describe…..

Results:

(Observations and data~~~data charts and graphs and calculations where appropriate.Organization is necessary)

  • For this lab: Labeled drawings and descriptions

Discussion:

  • Summarize what you did.
  • Comment on what happens when you move the letter "e" in different directions.
  • Comment on differences in view between low and high power.
  • Describe differences and similarities between animal and plant cells and prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells….differences and similarities that you observed!

Conclusion:

(A one sentence testable statement that follows from your results, what you did, what you observed)

Reflection:

(A personal statement about the activity, whether it relates to "real life," whether you liked it, suggested improvements
